This is a two-part workshop. You can choose to do the Pinhole workshop or the Hobo Camera Workshop, or if you want to geek out with us all day, you can take both.

Pinhole Workshop 10 am - 1 pm

This fun and playful workshop will focus on hand-making pinhole camera from everyday objects. Using your handmade made camera, you will make photographs on paper negatives that will be used to make prints in the darkroom. Additionally, we will create solargram pinhole cameras which will, over the course of days, weeks, or months, be able to track the path of the sun moving across the sky. Students are welcome to return to Makers Circle to process their solograms in the darkroom at a later date.

No prior photography experience is needed, and all supplies are provided. Open to all ages - anyone under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Hobo Camera Workshop 2pm - 6 pm

For anyone who wants to take their camera building skills to the next level, we will be spending the afternoon building home-made/DIY cameras. To begin, we will work together to create a camera obscura, predecessor to the modern camera, in order to better understand the science of camera optics. Each participant will build a Hobo cameras out of boxes, old enlarger lenses, odd camera parts, etc. We will have boxes and cans on hand, and a selection of old enlarger lenses and additional materials for more complex pinhole cameras. Participants are encouraged to bring other items they would like to play with such as cans. boxes, suitcases, old Polaroid cameras or other vintage medium-format cameras for potential modification. Time permitting, we will make images with paper negative and create contact prints in the darkroom.

The Hobo Camera Workshop is open to all ages. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult who is also registered for the class.

Post hurricane Helene, Makers Circle is relocating to Cumberland, MD. We hope to relaunch our residency program in June 2025. Please support our relocation efforts.
